Some plants have deep and wide root systems that allow them to take up water from a wider area. Some species have roots with increased growth rate, which makes them able to grow fast and follow rare rainfall. Some roots even maintain a high concentration of salt that allows them to take up moisture even more efficiently by the principle of osmosis. Other species, such as cacti, are able to absorb moisture directly through the epidermis, allowing them to utilize the moisture in fog. These are only some of the adaptive features that plants have evolved to maximize water uptake.
