Some plant species have succulent leaves or succulent stems to store large bodies of water when it is available. Succulent structures are swollen, fleshy leaves, stems, or even roots. The surface is often covered in a thick waxy layer, allowing them to resist water loss. As cacti have spines instead of leaves, the succulent stem works as a storage for water. These are only some of the adaptive features that plants have evolved to store water more efficiently.
