For Shahirah, innovative learning starts with visualizing science
Growing up in fast-paced Singapore, Shahirah understands schools and universities have no time to waste.
What is your favorite part about being a member of the Labster team?
I have so many favorite parts, to be honest, but one of them is that our team is so international. I’m from Singapore originally. And I moved to Denmark two years ago because my husband is a Dane. When I first joined the team I was very nervous, of course, but everyone was very warm and had a great energy, so I felt very welcome. I appreciate the fact that my boss encourages me while also challenging me.
Why did you choose to work at Labster?
I chose Labster because it makes me feel good to share a product that is beneficial to both students and instructors. My favorite part of Labster is that it helps students to visualize science with amazing 3D animations. You can see what’s happening inside cells or during invisible processes!
Labster is innovative. I think it’s the way young people learn today. Students can get more involved with what they are learning because Labster is interactive, kind of like a video game.
Is being from Singapore helpful when you sell into other Southeast Asian countries?
我喜欢能够与老师在我的清纯甜美try of origin. As a graduate of Singaporean schools, I’m very proud to have the opportunity now to support them with world-class virtual labs that prepare students for careers in science and high tech.
But I also really love getting to know educators from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. When I call a teacher to introduce them to Labster, it’s helpful to be able to start by asking ‘would you like to speak in English, or would you prefer Malay or Indonesian?’ It always opens the door to a new connection.
It has been great to work for an international company like Labster where everyone appreciates that all regions are unique and the schools and universities I work with all have individual needs. At the same time, I have learned that they have at least one thing in common: all schools and universities need plug and play learning tools.
“Educators want to spend time teaching, not managing technology.” – Shahirah Skavenborg
你喜欢做什么在你的空闲时间?
I love Thai boxing! I’ve been doing it for four years. I’ve even been in a competition! I had 30 friends and my dad by my ringside that night – but I lost! I felt like I disappointed them, but they cheered me on anyway and we ended up going out to dinner and enjoying the night together. There’s a club near me here in Denmark where they do Thai boxing but it’s closed right now because of the pandemic. I really miss it.
